God Loves Serial Killers

Sometime last year, Netflix released a Ted Bundy-based movie, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. For a crime movie buff, it was a must-watch. Sadly, I was in law school around this period so there was no point stealing to watch it while Bar Finals kept gnawing at me. I needed to fully enjoy the movie, so I postponed watching it till after law school.

Almost a year later, I finally get the movie. The timing could not have been better. I am done with law school; Miss Corona is taking the world on a ride; everyone is at home, thanks to the government-imposed lockdown. I pick a day I was less occupied with work to watch it. Now, it is 11am. Every other person at home is asleep. I start the movie. As a curious cat, I research Ted Bundy to ensure they got their facts right. One thing leads to another, I start researching other serial killers – Albert Fish, Ed Gein, Richard Ramirez, Jeff Dahmer, etc. I watch their interviews, see pictures of their crimes. I don’t know when tears start rolling down my cheeks. At every point I am viewing the macabre videos and pictures, all that persistently echoes in my head is:

All these guys needed to do to make heaven was believe in Christ… Yes, despite all the sickening and unthinkable things they’ve done.”

At that moment, it hit me, “Christ loved them!!”. Despite their heinous crimes and gruesome murders, Christ loved them. All they needed was to acknowledge, believe and confess that “Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead” and they would have been saved. As simple as that! Their gruesome offences would not even have been history. Their record, wiped clean. The only people that may remember would be humans. In the eyes of God, they would be new creatures.

Although God doesnt approve of crimes and wrongful acts, yet he loves everyone despite their offences. Even if these serial killers had accepted Christ on the electric chair or moments before being lethally injected, they would have been saved. Being a Christian is this simple.

Despite the gory details of your life, God cares about you. He cares for your redemption. His mercy is for everyone. His love keeps no record of wrongs Click To Tweet

Despite the gory details of their lives, God cared about them. He cared for their redemption. God’s love is mind-blowing. His love is immeasurable and divine. It is incomprehensible to the natural man. Being incomprehensible to man does not make it non-existent. His love is endless, reckless and beautiful. God’s Mercy is for everyone. His love keeps no record of your wrongs. When I realised the beauty of God’s love… even for a serial killer, through the eyes of Christ, I loved them also in that moment and every ounce of condemnation disappeared.

Man can never really understand the depth of God’s love except by the help of God’s Spirit and a revelation of Christ. God loves all men, but Man is oblivious. Love is indeed blind and that’s why like Paul, I pray for every person in despair or doubts, every criminal or potential criminal out there that they receive light and come to the understanding of God’s love for them. To hate is human; to love is divine.

To everyone still submerged by regrets of their past actions, if God loves a serial killer and can forgive one, there’s nothing extremely wicked, shockingly evil and vile that you may have done that can separate you from God’s love and forgiveness. All that’s needed is you going boldly to Him. He wants to hear your fears. He wants you saved. He wants to provide solutions to your problems. Just say the following:

Father Lord, I believe you sent your son, Jesus Christ to die for my sins. I believe you raised Him from the dead, conquering sin and death for my sake. I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and yield myself totally to Christ. I thank you for my sins are forgiven. I also thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit who is at work in my life, henceforth.

Remember, being a believer is this easy. To all believers, please bear in mind:

To err is human; to forgive is divine. To hate is human; to love is divine.
