“When you really want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it”
“The energy you put into the universe will dictate the world around you”
“I’m not really religious, I’m just spiritually in touch with the universe”
“I need a sign from the universe telling me I’m making the right choice.”
If you are a movie lover, you would have heard those quotes or similarly themed ones. You might find it funny or ridiculous (I most certainly do) but the number of people who believe in the universe keeps growing. Then we have those who believe in horoscopes, that their fortunes and behaviors are tied to the position of some stars or planets in the universe. What this tells me is that people are looking for explanations and would find them wherever they are offered.
One essential character of man is his undying search for an explanation. Why does the world exist? Why do things happen how they do? These happenings need to have some reasoning behind them. A lot of the time, science cannot provide all the answers – and it’s not for a lack of trying. People have looked to the church for these answers and the church hasn’t always had them. This scarcity of answers is what makes people attribute happenings to an unknown higher power.

People are less likely to be offended when you say the universe is responsible for something than when you say God is. More and more people are embracing this non-committal stance on God. As believers, we must not get carried away with the bandwagon. Like Romans 12:2 instructs, we must not pattern ourselves after the current way of thinking in the world.

Like Romans 12:2 instructs, we must not pattern ourselves after the current way of thinking in the world. Click To TweetFor the believer, however, there is an explanation. John offers this up in John 1:1 where he calls Jesus the ‘Word of God’. Word, as used by John, is translated from the Greek word ‘logos’. Logos means the logic or reasoning behind a thing. This means that Jesus is logic behind an unknown higher power, offering the first explanation for the seemingly unknown. John goes even further in his explanation by saying all things were made by him.
The interesting thing is that the universe in all its splendor is meant to point people to God. Paul expresses this thought in Romans 1, saying that Gods divine nature and power is seen through what He created. So why can’t everyone see this? Quite simple! 2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us that the god of this age has blinded their eyes from seeing message of Jesus who is the image of God. In a room full of light, the devil has placed a bag over their heads so they don’t see what is very obvious.

Part 2 would clear it all up.
