TRAMPLING ON THE ENEMY

In the last piece, we found that a Christian who isn’t conscious of his authority in Christ can be oppressed or manipulated by the devil. Read here.

What then is the believer’s way out of oppression or obsession?

The first thing to note is that Satan is not powerless as popularly held. The bible never states or imply that the devil lacks power. Instead, the bible teaches that the Christian has authority over ALL powers of the enemy.
In Luke 10:19, Jesus speaking says, “I give you power to trample upon serpents and scorpions and every power of the enemy.”  The power given to the believer in the above scripture is the word “exousia” in greek, which means “Authority”.

The consciousness of this authority aids the believer to trample upon the enemy. You can stop every activity of the devil in your zone. This is possible because of our position in Christ at the right hand of God.  We are situated above all dominions, might and thrones. We should rule over them, not the other way round.

We do not wrestle against Flesh and Blood

Paul made this clear in Eph 6:12. Although the devil would often collaborate with men or influence men in his bid to afflict believers, it is not the desire of God that men perish. He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked Ezekiel 18:23. Rather he wants their repentance and salvation.

This is further evidenced by Jesus’ radical instruction that we should love our enemies, and bless those who curse us. Matt 5:44-55. Ours is to resist the devil, keep our guard up and cast out devils. We are not slayers of men.

How do I rule over the Devil?

Apostle James gives us a very beautiful answer to this in James 4:7 – “Submit yourselves to God, resist the devil and he will flee.” Submitting to God is the sure way to resist the devil. Apostle Peter puts it this way “…whom resist steadfast in the faith” 1Peter 5:8-9. There is no resisting the devil without submitting to the Lord. There is no trampling upon the enemy without being steadfast in the faith. This speaks of a fellowship with God, via the word and prayers, such that there is so much influence of his Spirit upon our lives.

This is not some mere outward activity. It is agreeing with the patterns the Lord has ordained for our lives in his word and walking in them. To be steadfast is to be steady, unchanging, and constant in the faith. The import is that a life of consistent and sincere relationship with the Lord will invariably keep the enemy away without fail.

Paul summarized this in what he termed the Armour of God. Ephesians 6:10-18. To withstand the wiles of the devil, we must kit up. We must stand in the truth which his Christ, wearing the breastplate of righteousness (a consciousness of that gift of God). We must set the gospel as our priority, use the shield of faith to ward off the arrows of the enemy, be confident in his salvation and wield the sword of the Spirit i.e., the word of God.

Let’s speak briefly about this sword of the Spirit. The believer cannot actively resist the devil without the spoken word. If you notice a wrong pattern in your life, you must issue a “cease and desist” to the enemy by the word of God on your lips. The sword is not for plea or negotiation. It is not attack. We do not beg God to resist the devil. He has given us the authority to withstand him. We would have to use that authority.

How?

Renewing our minds with the word actively and consistently

Praying consistently.

You need that light of the Word within you, hence the need to meditate. This light will propel you to act. Sometimes, you will go on the offensive in prayers. You will rebuke, cut down, issue proclamations and destroy the activities of the enemy

“Where the word of a king is, there is power…” Eccl 8:4 The words of a believer backed up with power generated in prayers are very powerful. Stop playing the victim. Start Ruling! Speak! Command! Rebuke! Resist!

A lifestyle in the word builds Christ-consciousness. Moreso, it helps you to cast down those thoughts and imaginations inspired by the devil. A lifestyle of prayer will open you up to an endless availability of power. Prayer is also that machinery that converts the knowledge you have received in the word into revelation in your heart.

You cannot pray away an unrenewed mind, neither can you effectively pray without the right knowledge. Both must go hand in hand.

Never get afraid of the devil. Rather, get in the word and see who you are. Then act accordingly.

Do not be overly conscious of the devil, thereby reinventing spiritual problems in your mind, and fighting needless battles. Rather stay God-conscious. Power-conscious. Righteousness-conscious. You are God’s prime target for protection.

Our joy is that in the end, the God of peace will crush Satan under our feet.
